This holiday is considered a great church, although it is not included in the number of the Great Orthodox feasts. The full name of the holiday is the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary, but its name is popularly called Pokrov Day.
In fact, the Protection of the Mother of God (this is another name of the holiday) is a very interesting holiday, which is associated with the ancient legend of the appearance of Our Lady to people, as well as folk beliefs, omens, prayers and divinations. There are many temples and icons dedicated to the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos.
The Pokrov of the Most Holy Theotokos - the history of the holiday
The history of the Intercession of the Day dates back to the distant X century, or more precisely, to the year 910, when the Old Russian state had not yet adopted the Christian faith. According to legend, the event, to which the feast of the Protection of the Mother of God is dedicated, took place in the city of Constantinople, namely, in the Vlacherna church, where, according to legend, the robe of the Most Holy Mother of God was kept.
At this time, according to legends, the Saracen armies of the Arab tribes approached the Constantinople lands. The locals prayed earnestly for salvation from the threat of the enemy. At the same time, Blessed Andrew was on Blachernae, accompanied by a disciple of Epiphanius.
Once, while praying for salvation from enemies, St. Andrew saw the Most Holy Mother of God, who was walking through the air and was surrounded by angels and saints. The Mother of God knelt and began to pray with people for the salvation of the Church of Blachernae and the whole of Constantinople. She prayed and stretched over the people an omophorion (or veil) that stretched over the pilgrims.
According to the legend, under the cover of the Most Holy Theotokos, the inhabitants became invisible to the enemies, which made the Saracens lift the siege and leave the city.
Cover Day - the story of a holiday in popular belief
The idea of the people about the origin of the feast of the Protection of the Mother of God varies greatly with the version of the Orthodox Church. Folk legend tells of a wandering Virgin, which was denied overnight stay in one of the settlements. For this, the prophet Elijah became angry with the locals and sent heavy rain, hail, thunder and lightning to them. Grieving, the Mother of God revealed her omophorion (cover) over people and saved them from the elements. According to the belief, after that the locals became kind-hearted and hospitable.
Prayer on the Intercession of the Holy Virgin
On the Pokrov Day, they traditionally attend church and ask for the blessing of the Mother of God, put candles on her icons and pray, praising the kindness and compassion of the Most Holy Mother of God.
On the cover of the day, prayers will appeal to the Mother of God and to her glory. Below is one of the most famous prayers to the Virgin. But you can turn to the Mother of God in your own words, coming from the very heart.
This small prayer to the glory of the Most Holy Theotokos was created on the basis of the greeting of the Archangel Gabriel to the Mother of God during the Annunciation. Everyone knows “Ave, Maria” - the same prayer, only in Latin.
