Secrets of growing myrtle at home
At all times, the elegant myrtle tree was considered a symbol of well-being, beauty and eternal youth. The ancient Greeks associated his appearance with the goddess Aphrodite, who, according to legends, loved this plant very much, which is why it was planted around her temples, during the annual holidays they were decorated with myrtle flowers and wreaths.
Notable citizens necessarily washed with water, which insisted on the leaves of the myrtle, because such a solution was considered a real elixir of vigor and health. Today, from the shoots, leaves and flowers of myrtle make essential oils, which are widely used in perfumery and medicine.
In total in nature there are about 40 species of this beautiful plant, which is most common in Western Asia, North Africa, the Caribbean islands and the lands of the Mediterranean. In our latitudes, myrtle is mainly grown at home, which is quite justified: there are several species that for many years will delight you with lush foliage and delicate flowering.
By the way, this is exactly the culture that is easily prone to cutting, it can be given absolutely any shape, which is why it is often used for decorating rooms in the style of bonsai.
In addition, the plant has pronounced phytoncidal and beneficial properties, destroying most of the pathogenic bacteria and microbes in the room where it stands.
How to grow?
In nature, this plant is capable of reaching 5 meters in height, while in the room its maximum height is 60-100 cm, which is very convenient. In room culture, the most common and simplest in terms of care is myrtle, which has glossy, pointed leaves and blooms in small white flowers that emit a very pleasant aroma.
By the way, flowering in such a species can be achieved as early as 4-5 years of cultivation, while caring for them, in fact, boils down to elementary actions, which, however, should not be forgotten. For example, myrtle badly forgives irregular watering, besides, it needs a microclimate with high humidity, which means that it is important to constantly spray it.
So, if you have acquired this elegant culture, then for the beginning it is extremely important for you to sort out its new home location.Myrtle does not like and will not grow in the shade; he prefers a bright but diffused light, and may even carry a small amount of direct rays.
The most ideal location is windows facing west or east. If the plant had to be placed on the southern windows, then do not forget to protect it from the midday rays in the summer.
Myrtle trees, though they like bright light, but prefer coolness, and therefore make sure that the room in which the plant is located is well ventilated. In the summer, they can be taken out at all on the street, the main thing is not to place it under the open sunshine.
In winter, make sure that the air temperature does not fall below 5 °, the ideal level is 8-10 °. As we have already said, the myrtle tree is extremely sensitive to regular watering: from the beginning of spring and almost to the very end of autumn it must be watered abundantly, in winter the volumes decrease, the main thing is to ensure that the soil does not have time to dry. Water for irrigation is better to use separated, also make sure that it does not stand in the pan.
Soil and top dressing
While the plant is quite young, it must be replanted every year in the spring, adults are transplanted as needed, usually no more than once every 2-3 years. At the bottom of the pot must spread a wide drainage, and as a substrate is ideal soil for palm trees, which can be bought in a flower shop.
When transplanting it is very important not to bury the base of the trunk strongly in the soil, the trees do not like it. As a top dressing use a complex flower fertilizer, which must be introduced, from early spring until late autumn, once every two weeks. During the winter dormancy, there is no need to feed the plant.
In fact, if you follow all the above rules of care, then, most likely, you will be able to grow a healthy and beautiful plant, but in fact the whole flavor of myrtle trees is that they can be given the original crown! How to cut and pinch the plant correctly so as not to harm it?
If the purpose of cultivation is abundant flowering, then you should not get carried away with a haircut, as flower buds simply will not form. As for shaping, then, for a start, it is important to determine the desired future view.
The stem is better not to bare, because it is not very strong. If the lateral shoots are cut off, the myrtle will most likely take the form of a tree with a branchy crown, and if the upper shoot, the shape of a lush bush.If you give the plant itself, then, most likely, it will take the form of a pyramid.
In principle, it is possible to achieve more complex forms, for example, to form a thick and squat pillow, but remember that in this case they must be generously fed.
