How to get rid of iodine allergy?

Many of you will probably be surprised by the phenomenon of allergy to iodine. However, it does occur, although it is not among the common reactions and is quite rare. Usually it is detected by chance, and causes sincere surprise among people with the presence of allergenic properties of such a simple and popular means. Why is there an allergy to iodine, and in what forms is it manifested? Is it possible to get rid of it and in what ways? These questions and try to find answers.

Reaction factors

For a start it is worth noting that iodine as a component, is part of many drugs used for prophylactic purposes and for the treatment of diseases of the thyroid gland, and is also in an antiseptic agent.

Symptoms of intolerance at the first use are very rare, therefore, it is difficult to ascertain an allergy to it, and, as a rule, it makes itself felt after several uses. The most common causes of the reaction can be counted on the fingers, it is:

  • chronic diseases;
  • excess doses of iodine-containing drugs;
  • individual intolerance of the chemical element.

Overdose is excluded by most specialists, because the thyroid gland is capable of neutralizing it. But the presence of genetic abnormalities and diseases in which the iodine-containing agent is used independently can be a factor in the allergic reaction due to metabolic disturbances and incomplete assimilation of the microelement by the body, which usually manifests itself in children with a genetic predisposition.

Description of the process and its symptoms

At the level of the organism, an allergy to a chemical element is manifested in three stages:

  1. On the first, the iodine-containing agent is converted into a new form that binds to proteins.
  2. In the second, the body begins to form antibodies.
  3. In the third, the immune system provokes a reaction.

For immunity, the allergen is a foreign substance, therefore the response of the body is the release of about twenty types of active ingredients, such as serotonin, kinin, heparin, which provoke the corresponding symptoms. All symptoms of iodine allergy fall into two categories:

Dermatological, with signs:
  • the occurrence of itching;
  • changes in the color of the skin and the appearance of a pink or bright red rash;
  • swelling in places of application of iodine;
  • finely bubbly eruptions;
  • many forms of erythema or Stevens-Jones symptom;
  • in rare cases, with the introduction of a contrast agent, toxic bullous dermatitis.
Systemic, with intravenous administration of iodine-containing agents and their external use, with signs of:
  • difficulty breathing with an increase in shortness of breath;
  • swelling of the nasolabial zones;
  • angioedema and angioedema;
  • bronchospasm;
  • erythema of the upper layer of the skin;
  • allergic rhinitis.

The reaction to iodine can have various symptoms, according to the individual characteristics of the organism, but the most serious symptom is the rapid development of anaphylactic shock, caused by the use of a chemical element inside or intravenous administration of drugs based on iodine.

Intramuscular administration of the agent has the most tragic consequences; therefore, procedures with iodine-containing medications should be carried out exclusively by medical personnel who are able to provide first aid to the injured, and pronounced signs of allergy should be treated by a specialist.

Drug therapy

The treatment of intolerance to a chemical element is, above all, impossible without the exclusion of any contact with it. Allergy in mild form is treated with antihistamine means of the second generation, not causing drowsiness, but if there is a swelling of Quincke or bronchospasm, then intravenously injected steroid hormones, for example, the drug "Dexamethasone".

With a pronounced edema of the larynx, complex therapy with steroid hormones and antihistamine drugs is used, and in complicated cases a tracheotomy tube is installed, which allows to adjust the breathing process.

Anaphylactic shock entails immediate cessation of contact with the allergen and adrenaline measures, in case of urgent need - cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The most successful drugs for allergies to iodine are:

  • for preventive purposes, Tavegil, which is equally good in the treatment of dermatitis, in the reactions of intolerance to some drugs;
  • with anaphylactic shock, dermatitis, allergies - "Pipolfen";
  • with itching, swelling of mucous membranes, sneezing - antihistamine "Erius";
  • in the case of drug allergies, angioedema, dermatitis, allergic asthma - "Loratodin";
  • for emergency cases - antihistamine "Supradin";
  • from allergies, itching, with anaphylactic shock, allergic complications, bronchial asthma - “Dimedrol”;
  • with drug and food allergies, angioedema, skin itching - "Fenkrol."

Folk therapy

Folk remedies are not less effective than drugs, and are successfully used to relieve itchy sensations and reduce rashes. All of them are made from natural ingredients - herbs, affordable and have proven their worth:

  1. Chamomile tincture and a string for internal use is prepared from a mixture of components, filled with boiling water and infused for fifteen minutes. You can do it separately, then chamomile infusion is drunk three times a day, and from the chain five times.
  2. Herbal infusions are used for therapeutic baths that help to stop inflammatory skin processes and more comfortable to tolerate a course of therapy.
  3. You can be treated with juice squeezed from celery root. This plant is considered the most useful for allergies. Herbal medicine is drunk three times a day, the dosage is one to two teaspoons of the means before a meal, for thirty to sixty minutes.
  4. From the root of celery odorous prepared and infusion.It is necessary to grind, pour boiling water and insist two hours, filter. For two tablespoons of the plant, a glass of liquid. Drink three times a day before meals for a third cup.

Therapy by excluding reaction provocateurs

To provoke an allergy to iodine is capable of any medicine that contains it. The following drugs are the most popular drugs with a chemical element. So, you should exclude from the application or be especially careful when using:

  1. Alcohol iodine solution, which is very common in everyday life and is often used. There is a bottle of iodine in every home medicine chest, and for any wound, we immediately rush to treat it with this tool to avoid infection.
  2. Lugol's solution, known from childhood to anyone who has often been diagnosed with respiratory infections, is a sore throat.
  3. Drugs such as "Iodomarin", "L-thyroxine", used with iodine deficiency, various thyroid diseases, and for prophylactic purposes.
  4. Drugs for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias.
  5. Contrast agents for diagnostics (radiography, computed and magnetic resonance imaging).

Especially pay attention to the fifth point, as contrast agents are used for intravenous administration, which is much more dangerous for the body due to the lightning speed of the chemical element entering the bloodstream, and they contain many other harmful allergens. Diagnosis with contrast agents must be agreed with your doctor.

Foods with a high iodine content should be removed from the diet. The reaction will not take long if you ate:

Carefully make your own menu and be interested in the composition of dishes that are not tasted at home.

How to determine the presence of a reaction?

The procedure is simple, and it can be done at home on your own. What to do to identify an allergy to iodine?

  1. Soak cotton buds in solution and apply strips on the neck, in the zone with the thinnest and most sensitive epidermis. Wait a bit.
  2. If there is no reaction, then there is no allergy. If there are symptoms - there is, and you should immediately wash the solution.
  3. The disappearance of the strips in a couple of hours indicates iodine deficiency and requires the adoption of measures to eliminate it.

Be careful and attentive to yourself, so as not to miss the symptoms of an allergy to iodine.
